Cassin’s kingbird Tyrannus vociferans [note: 13Feb2011 identification has now been confirmed by experts beyond any doubt] (not called a Flycatcher for nothing) snatching an insect out of the air. Seen over the pond on Dairy Creek Road past the dog park and closed gate in El Chorro Regional Park, San Luis Obispo, CA, 12 Feb 2011. ref. www.slocountyparks.com/activities/el_chorro.htm

ID Note by esteemed naturalist Marlin Harms. "That kingbird photo is very amazing. It is very hard to tell what species it is from your photo, but a Western Kingbird would be very early at this date 12 Feb 2011] . (Anything before early March is notable.) Much more common now would be a Cassin’s Kingbird, which is very similar, but does have a white malar patch, which may be what we’re seeing on your bird just below its eye. "

Andrew Reding says "That is a Cassin’s kingbird."

Joyce Cory and I (present) now tend to agree – "chin not all white, white malar patch… "

More expert verification requested of Tom Edell, Brad Schram, and Bill Bouton…

Brad said "Nice action shot! Definitely Cassin’s Kingbird–no white outer tail feathers, does have dark face, upper breast, wing coverts, all contrast strongly with white throat. Western would be ash gray, the throat not strongly contrasting. And yes–there are only a handful of winter Western Kingbirds in California history."
Bill Bouton said "I see that you already got your answer before I even read the question. A bit of reinforcement to what Brad said… here’s what the tail would look like if it was a Western Kingbird (not my image): <= image sent in private e-mail showing white sides on tail"
It is so nice to have experts like these – amazing knowledge and contribution to science.
I’m greatly impressed.

Maricopa County Regional Park – Cave Creek Recreation Area Sign
Regional

The Cave Creek Recreation Area is part of the Maricopa County Regional Park system. It is north of the Carefree Highway at 32nd Street. It has several nice moderate trails and connects to Arizona State Trust Land if you have a State Trust Land Permit. There is talk of eventually connecting this Park with the Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area and then with the Tonto National Forest.

Mountain Bikers, equestrians and hikers share these trails.

There was mining in this area and there are several mine ruins.

The Stagecoach to Prescott went through the State Trust Land to the North and stopped at Apache Springs.

Gunsight Mountain to the North deserves its name :)

East Sooke Regional park, Alldridge Point Petroglyphs 12:54pm

From Creyke Point (48°19’31.29"N, 123°37’49.56"W), East Sooke Regional park we could see Wolfe Island (48°19’27.79"N, 123°38’5.69"W) in Campbell Bay. Beyond the Juan de Fuca Strait the Olympic Mountain Range was barely visible through the clouds. It took about an hour to reach the Alldridge petroglyphs (48°19’4.01"N, 23°38’20.02"W) because we stopped to take photos and videos of a large arbutus, a life-rich tidal pool (where Dave, Jim and Diego found sea anemones and sea stars): wildflowers like Blue-eyed Grass, Castilleja coccinea, Fool’s Onion and stone crop, pine trees clinging to the rocks dwarfed by the strong ocean winds, waves crashing along the coastal trail. We watched two sea lions emerge near us just off shore when we stopped for lunch on a rocky outcrop. We didn’t go the extra ten kilometers to see the Beechey Head landmark (48°18’52.34"N, 123°39’15.67"W) as we had a few months ago. The Alldridge petroglyphs (48°19’4.01"N, 123°38’20.02"W) had been defaced with graffiti since our last visit. At Alldridge Point we chose to return along the coastal trail rather than take the wooded trail back to Aylard Farm. On the way back we saw a sea otter enjoying the fish he had just caught. An eagle landed and surveyed the surroundings as we sipped coffee and tea on the patio of the Smoking Tuna. Young Diego explored the docks, launched his toy sailboat and admired the harbour seals.

Shakespeare Regional Park, Auckland, North Island, New Zealand

We took a 2-3 hour walk up into the hills of Shakespeare Regional Park. It sits on the coast and has a great view of Auckland City from across the water. It was a nice end to the holiday to get some last minute sun and fresh air. The yellow and green rolling hills, coast line and sea were all awesome to shoot; I was just annoyed I had so little space left on my camera.
