Gender, Identity & Writing, Academy of DIY
ART and Literature

Braving rocketing temperatures, and sweating into vinyl lounges under the tin roof of the old Balfours factory, determined participants in the Academy of DIY discussed topics ranging from Gender, Identity and Writing, to Travel Writing, Globalisation and the Majority World, to Street Art, to how to reinvigorate Australian culture.

While others found cooler rooms to participate on workshops on Radical Cheerleading to Zine Making to Mending and Crocheting and everything in between!

On March 15 and 16 2008, the closing weekend of the Adelaide Fringe Festival and two weeks into the longest heatwave on record, my pal Ianto Ware and I coordinated the third Adelaide Zine, DIY & Arts Fair, and its associated event, the Academy of DIY.

The events are a celebration of local, independent arts, literature and culture: the Zine Fair drew together artists, writers and designers from around the country, and the Academy offered a space for people to share their thoughts, skills and ideas in a range of informal workshops and forums.
